The biology: why the myth persists

Why does shaved hair feel coarser?

Hair thickness (diameter), color, texture, and growth rate are determined by:

  1. Genetics: The follicle's programming is inherited. Follicle diameter determines hair shaft diameter — a wider follicle produces thicker hair. Shaving cannot change follicle diameter.

  2. Hormones: Androgens stimulate body hair growth and can increase hair thickness. This is why pubic hair is coarser than arm hair, and why body hair often changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. These changes are hormonal, not mechanical.
